We pride ourselves in delivering a quality product that satisfies our customers. It is important to understand the special characteristics of wood and rustic or distressed wood along with all of the finishes that are applied
Characteristics of Wood
Wood is a living thing. It has variations in color, texture and markings. This is the beauty of wood! These variations will pick up stain and paint differently. With wood being a living thing, you can also expect subtle changes in it over time. Some woods will get richer in color over time and others will react to variations in light and or humidity.
Rustic woods feature dramatic pin holes, sound and split knots that will vary in size, worm holes, mineral stains, cracks, sapwood, and grain variation over the entire door, drawer face front and other solid wood panels and moldings. Never will these rustic characteristics compromise the structural integrity of the cabinet.
Because of the characteristics of Rustic wood, it is expected that through use and environmental acclimatization, some knots will separate from the surrounding wood and could become loose. Variations in the entire kitchen may be different from what you witness in the displays or a finish sample. All of these characteristics and variations are an expression of nature itself and reflect he beauty and warmth that wood provides. This expression is the beauty of wood.
Finish Options
Stains - All stains are semi-transparent to help bring out the natural beauty of the wood's grain and texture. The stain is either sprayed or hand-wiped onto the wood. A sealer is then applied and hand-sanded to a smooth surface. Finally, a self leveling clear top coat is applied to protect the color, the beauty of the product. Not all colors will work with all wood species as some are denser than others and don't except the stains as well.
Solid Paint Colors (Lacquer) - Solid colors (opaque) are only available in Maple, Oak and MDF (there may be exceptions). The solid color finish is a multi layered finish. A solid color primer is applied first, then hand-sanded to a smooth surface, follow by a self leveling solid color top coat and finally oven-dried to a smooth, hard finish.
NOTE: Since wood can expand and contract with temperature and humidity, cracks and splits along the rails and assembly joint may occur. In Maple, the door center panel will be produced in MDF.
Rub-Through - A finish technique where the second finish coat (opaque stain) is wiped off to expose the wood underneath then covered with a clear top coat giving a worn appearance. Rub-through is limited to certain colors.
Solid Paint with Hand-Brushed glaze - This unique finish offers limited color combinations but we also can offer a custom color for our clients. We use a solid paint technique followed by adding a hand brushed glaze over the paint. You will see brush strokes in this beautiful finish.
Solid Paint with Highlight glaze - This unique finish offers limited color combinations but we also can offer a custom color for our clients. We use a solid paint technique followed by adding a glaze over the entire door. The glaze is then rubbed off leaving highlight "hang ups" in all of the details of the door. The glaze changes the painted color slightly giving it a richer appearance.
Polyurethane Finish - A polyurethane coating forms a durable high gloss surface with an impermeable seal from the environment, protecting the substrate from humidity and is used on paint finishes.
Polyester Finish - The polyester coating will produce a thick and thermosetting high gloss film layer which is strong, high resistant to chemicals, scratches and heat. the hardness and durability of this coating is even greater than the PU coating and is used on the stains.
Custom Color Match - We can offer a custom color match to our customers. They will need to provide us with a sample of the color to be matched.
Distressing - Is a method of creating an illusion of old, used cabinetry on new wood. It is offered in 3 different steps: DT (distressing)- is sanded down corners and edges, knife splits, dents and nicks , WC (worn corners)- are sanded down corners and edges only, and KD (knife splits and Dents) is a distressing similar to DT only without sanded down corners and edges. These are not available in MDF doors or paint finished on wood doors.
Laminate- For an incredibly durable finish some products are available with laminate. Another creative invention with a wide range of wood grain and pearlized finishes, even textures which provides easy to clean durability.
